MFL

Our Modern Foreign Language intent is to develop pupil interest in learning other languages. We introduce pupils to French in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating, to simulate pupil curiosity about language. We want pupils to have an understanding of different cultures and to develop awareness of cultural differences in other countries to our own. We aim to encourage and develop pupil confidence and to prepare them to continue their learning in KS3.

Our Aims
To ensure that all pupils:
  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt  discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
Our French lessons in Class 3 (year 3 and 4) focus on the '3 Pillars of Language Learning' - phonics, grammar and vocabulary. Within this, we complete speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. In the Autumn term, we learnt about French greeting and naming animals in French, including learning about gendered nouns and definite and indefinite articles
During French lessons, Class 4 (year 5 and 6) learn the names of different objects found around the classroom. They work hard on their pronunciation and practice their listening skills, identifying whether or not the correct word is being said to match the picture on the board.
To consolidate their knowledge, they match pictures in their learning books to the corresponding words and then practiced writing them.
To finish this learning, they listen to a song about what was found in a pencil case and sing along to the words they learn.
