Welcome to the Autumn Term full of exciting new learning. Please read on to find more information about what we learn in each subject.

Homework

Ideally, children in Class 2 should complete 10 minutes of practice each day, at least five times a week, for reading, spelling, and addition number facts.

Reading

Listening to your child read at home is one of the most effective ways to support their academic progress across all areas of the curriculum.

The book your child brings home is carefully selected to match their current reading ability—both in terms of decoding (word reading) and comprehension.

If your child is still attending Read. Write. Inc lessons, their RWI books will be changed for them by an adult. It is important that they re-read these books daily during the time they have them to improve their confidence, decoding and overall fluency.

Once children have graduated from R.W.I, they will begin to access the Accelarated Reader Programme. When they finish their book, they will be able to complete a quiz on it in school. Scoring 80% or higher on three quizzes will allow them to progress to the next spine point.

Spelling

Spelling homework involves practising a list of 10 focus words each week. These words will be introduced every Monday. We will then check the children’s progress and understanding the following Monday with a "Spell It Out" check.

Addition/Subtraction Number Facts

Our children in class 2 have been given a Maths Game Homework Pack with resources and instructions on how to play the games. Please play the games for 5 to 10 minutes daily.

Children can also practise their number facts using Numbots. Please check the back of your child’s reading record for their login details.

This fantastic online programme adjusts automatically as your child plays, ensuring they are always appropriately challenged.

HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS (HFWs) are, as the name would suggest, words which appear very frequently in the English language and in written texts such as and, the, as, it, dog, man, good, gone, which, think, began and so on. As these words are used and appear so regularly, it is very important for children to be able to read and spell them from an early age in Reception.

Please click the link below to view a full list of all words which are classed as high frequency and are therefore classed as being vitally important for children to be able to read and spell.

From Year 1, COMMON EXCEPTION WORDS are introduced. These are words which appear quite regularly in spoken and written English but, unfortunately for young readers and writers, do not always follow the fundamental single phonic sounds and digraphs (sounds which are composed of two letters such as th, sh and ch) which children become familiar with in Class 1/EYFS and indeed in a nursery setting.

Common exception words are best split into year groups with an expectation that children should be able to read and spell the relevant words by the time they reach the end of each academic year. As you would expect, Year 1 and 2 children start to learn simpler words which may still contain the odd irregular phonic sound or pattern such as once, friend, people and water, before progressing to trickier words in Key Stage 2 such as answer, breathe, certain, interest and peculiar.
