Music

Our Music intent at Summercourt is to provide all our pupils with a range of learning experiences which create confident performers who maximise the knowledge and understanding they acquire through their journey through our school. Pupils gain a firm understanding of what music is through a constant range of listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing across a wide variety of topics as part of our immersive curriculum. These learning opportunities provide exposure to a range of styles, traditions and musical genres.

The majority of our teaching is taken from the 'Charanga' music scheme. Our music curriculum ensures that pupils have consistent and constant opportunity to listen, sing, play, perform and evaluate. This is embedded in classroom activities as well as our termly class assemblies, end of term class productions and other performance opportunities.

Classroom lessons are planned to ensure a progression of skill, knowledge and vocabulary through each pupil's journey. Pupils progress with their confidence and understanding of music through various opportunities to listen and appreciate a wide range of musical styles through cross curricular activities and stand alone lessons.

Our Aim
To ensure that all pupils:
  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
In the Expressive Arts and Design, children in the EYFS have many opportunities to explore their artistic and cultural awareness. Through art, design, drama and music, children will develop their imaginative and creativity and build confidence to express themselves in a variety of ways.
Class 2 (year 1 and 2) listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians. They learn to sing and to use their voices, to create music on their own and with others. Here they are performing Daydream Believer by The Monkees to the school and parents.
Class 3 (year 3 and 4) had a wonderful time at The Big Sing in the Hall for Cornwall. Pupils from schools all over the county joined in with this celebration of singing. We sang lots of things we knew and learnt a few new songs too. It was amazing to have a choir and a live band - it felt like we were at a festival! The children were all really well behaved and an absolute credit to their families. We were also given a Gold Award from the Cornish Singing Schools initiative, which we achieved by completing a range of activities across the year. Well done everyone!
In music, Class 4 (year 5 and 6) had learnt to sing the song 'happy'. They discussed how it made them feel and compared it to other pop songs, noticing similarities and differences in songs within the same genre. They then learned the song on the recorder and performed it whilst others sang along.
